Summer Program

Summer Leadership Program

July 2012 ~ Lions Camp Pride, New Durham, NH

Our signature Summer Program is an adventure in self discovery and leadership development.

We bring high school students together from across the state for a week of experiential activities designed to help them explore their values, relationships and coping strategies, and connect with their own inner strength while connecting with other young people. For 26 years, New Hampshire teens report that Summer Program has changed their lives in dramatic ways.

Through our supportive environment and proven approaches, students learn to take positive, healthy risks to help them gain self-awareness, learn critical life skills, and acquire important insight and knowledge. During our general education sessions, all participants gain basic knowledge about violence prevention, diversity, building self-esteem, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, connecting with one’s community, and coping with grief and loss.

Throughout the week, we also offer mini-workshops which are designed to provide current and accurate information on specific topics relevant to teens such as stress and time management, alcohol and drug abuse, dating violence, reproductive health, suicide prevention and diversity awareness.

Professional staff from NH Teen Institute lead the program, together with adult volunteers from social service agencies active in the field of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention and education, and youth who are past graduates of the program. All volunteers undergo an intensive 36 hour training prior to the program, as well as a thorough background check.

During Summer Program, participants:

  • celebrate their own uniqueness
  • begin to make a difference in their lives and communities
  • recognize and challenge common misconceptions about alcohol, tobacco and other drug use
  • learn practical resistance skills for dealing with peers and media pressure to engage in alcohol, tobacco and other drug use
  • examine their self-image and its effects on their behavior
  • set goals and keep track of their personal progress
  • identify everyday decisions and how others may influence them
  • learn to analyze problem situations and consider the consequences and alternate solutions before making a decision
  • identify ways to reduce stress and anxiety
  • learn to look at personal challenges in a positive light.
